Resilience. This past weekend they played the US Open Golf tournament just
outside Washington, DC. What we witnessed was the definition of resilience. A
young Irish lad of 22, who is on track to become the next best golfer, has had
great success but also a couple of incredible "golf disasters" at the British
Open in 2010 and, in April, at the Masters in Augusta, where he took a 4 shot
lead into the final round and shot an 80 to lose it. Yesterday he won by an
amazing 8 shots, set twelve (12) records, and gave his Dad a great Father's
Day present - major championship! The resilience he demonstrated, the focus,
the fun, the ability to learn from past mistakes, was a lesson for us all. How
often do we get "beaten down" by events and circumstances and struggle to come
back and make even greater things happen? As we start the summer season give
some thought as to what you have learned and how you can continue to improve
as a person and to make a contribution to your community and our world.
" In order to succeed, people need a sense of self-efficacy, struggle together
with resilience to meet the inevitable obstacles and inequities of life. "
