Nature. We are in hurricane season and Bermuda can be particularly vulnerable to these storms even though we are a mere 21 square miles 700 miles off the east coast of the US. So far this year we have been spared but the storms keep forming as the systems move off of the west coast of Africa. With the changes in our weather patterns it seems that more places are no likely to get the brunt of these storms (Nova Scotia had Earl last weekend). These storms demonstrate the real power of nature and water in particular when it is driven by high winds. What we learn from these storms is the art of preparation. The better prepared you are the less damage that you will hopefully see to your property and to your community. As children of we were in Boy Scouts or Girl Guides or other organizations where one of the key mottos was “be prepared” – that has not changed and in later life it is even more critical to “be prepared’ – to take steps in advance to mitigate challenges and problems.
