Wake-up call. How quickly things can change. A couple of weeks ago our family was planning a big party for my brotherís 80th birthday. Twelve days ago he was not feeling well and went to his doctor who sent him immediately to hospital for tests on his heart. Further tests were completed a few days later and to all of our shock, he was diagnosed as requiring bypass surgery. This was scheduled for two days later. I joined his family in the day prior to the surgery and spent the surgery day in the hospital waiting to hear the results. It turned out to be more damage than had been expected but I can report that he is on the mend. As a family with no heart disease, but with several of us being what we assumed to be controlled diabetics, this was a major reality check. The gift we have received from him for his big birthday is the knowledge that we must be diligent at all times and really take good care of ourselves. I can only suggest that each of you learn from our experience and ensure that you watch for all danger signals.
"One day some people came to the master and asked: how can you be happy in a world of such impermanence, where you cannot protect your loved ones from harm, illness or death? The master held up a glass and said: someone gave me this glass; it holds my water admirably and it glistens in the sunlight. I touch it and it rings! one day the wind may blow it off the shelf, or my elbow may knock it from the table. I know this glass is already broken, so i enjoy it -- incredibly.
