Amazing Amazon. Karen and I did a trip down the Amazon River, which included three days at a jungle lodge in the northwest corner of Amazonia. I had read about this great river but seeing it, its immensity, the catchment area (5 degrees north of equator and 20 degrees south), the sheer size and volume of water, the rising of the river by 30 plus feet in June after the rainy season, and the breadth and length of it. It was a wonderful experience and we made some great friends along the way. A trip of this sort makes you marvel even more at the power of nature and to think that this river has been moving these volumes of water with benefit to our whole planet for eons. As we move towards a new year it seems to me that to ensure these wonders of nature that all of us have a responsibility to do our small parts to protect our environment.
