Panama. Karen and I were
in Panama this past week. What an interesting country. The canal,
if you have never seen it, it is quite amazing. It is almost unreal
to be by the canal near the Gamboa Rainforest and watch very large
ships gliding past you on one of the man-made lakes that form part
of the canal system. Watching very large ships pass through the
lock system at Miraflores as they drop over 50 feet in two stages
is quite a process. What is even more significant is that all of
this was built over 100 years ago. Almost 1 million ships have transited
the canal in that time Think of the foresight this took at that
time. A great lesson in looking how change can create a major benefit
for a country and for the world. We do not need to take such large
steps but we do need to continue to look ahead and plan out futures.
"The high prize of life, the crowning glory of a man is
to be born with a bias to some pursuit which finds him in employment
and happiness - whether it be to make baskets, or broadswords or
canals, or statues, or songs."
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
